 Each point in the graph below shows the profit and turnover data for a company. Each company belongs to one of the three industries: textile, cement and steel.

For how many companies does the profit exceed 10% of turnover?

Solution

Draw a line from the bottom left corner to the top right corner of the graph. The symbols lying above the line are the ones in which the profits exceeds 10% of the turnover.

∵ The equation of this line is Profit = 0.10 × turnover
 
There were 2 Textile companies, 2 Cement companies and 3 Steel companies for which the profits exceeded 10% of turnover.

∴ For 7 companies the profits exceeded 10% of turnover.

Hence, option (b).
