CAT 2017 Slot 1QA Question 10

RatioEasy

A stall sells popcorn and chips in packets of three sizes: large, super, and jumbo. The numbers of large, super, and jumbo packets in its stock are in the ratio 7 : 17 : 16 for popcorn and 6 : 15 : 14 for chips. If the total number of popcorn packets in its stock is the same as that of chips packets, then the numbers of jumbo popcorn packets and jumbo chips packets are in the ratio:

Answer & solution

Correct answer: 1 : 1

  • 1 : 1

  • B

    8 : 7

  • C

    4 : 3

  • D

    6 : 5

Solution

Easy

Both products have the same total TT. The jumbo share is just the jumbo ratio-part over the sum of its chain's parts, times TT. Compute each jumbo fraction and form the ratio.

1

Jumbo popcorn. Popcorn ratio 7:17:167:17:16, sum =40=40.

jumbo popcorn=1640T=0.4T\begin{aligned} &\text{jumbo popcorn} = \frac{16}{40}\,T = 0.4\,T \end{aligned}
2

Jumbo chips. Chips ratio 6:15:146:15:14, sum =35=35.

jumbo chips=1435T=0.4T\begin{aligned} &\text{jumbo chips} = \frac{14}{35}\,T = 0.4\,T \end{aligned}
3

Required ratio. Both equal 0.4T0.4T (using the same TT from the problem).

0.4T:0.4T=1:1\begin{aligned} &0.4\,T : 0.4\,T = 1:1 \end{aligned}
1:11:1
