CAT 2018 Slot 2QA Question 10

MixturesEasy

The strength of a salt solution is p% if 100 ml of the solution contains p grams of salt. If three salt solutions A, B, C are mixed in the proportion 1 : 2 : 3, then the resulting solution has strength 20%. If instead the proportion is 3 : 2 : 1, then the resulting solution has strength 30%. A fourth solution, D, is produced by mixing B and C in the ratio 2 : 7. The ratio of the strength of D to that of A is?

Answer & solution

Correct answer: 1 : 3

  • 1 : 3

  • B

    1 : 4

  • C

    2 : 5

  • D

    3 : 10

Solution

Easy

Let strengths of A, B, C be a,b,ca,b,c. The two mixing ratios give two weighted-average equations. We don't need all three values — combine the equations to express 2b+7c2b+7c (which appears in D's recipe) in terms of aa.

1

Ratio 1:2:31:2:3 gives strength 20%20\%.

a+2b+3c1+2+3=20 a+2b+3c=120(1)\begin{aligned} &\frac{a+2b+3c}{1+2+3} = 20\\ &\Rightarrow\ a+2b+3c = 120 \quad\text{(1)} \end{aligned}
2

Ratio 3:2:13:2:1 gives strength 30%30\%.

3a+2b+c3+2+1=30 3a+2b+c=180(2)\begin{aligned} &\frac{3a+2b+c}{3+2+1} = 30\\ &\Rightarrow\ 3a+2b+c = 180 \quad\text{(2)} \end{aligned}
3

Combine to isolate 2b+7c2b+7c. Take 3×(1)2×(2)3\times(1) - 2\times(2) to clear aa on one side conveniently:

3(a+2b+3c)=6a+4b+2c[3×(1) written via 2×(2)] 3a+6b+9c=6a+4b+2c 2b+7c=3a\begin{aligned} &3(a+2b+3c) = 6a+4b+2c \quad\text{[}3\times(1)\text{ written via }2\times(2)\text{]}\\ &\Rightarrow\ 3a+6b+9c = 6a+4b+2c\\ &\Rightarrow\ 2b+7c = 3a \end{aligned}
4

Strength of D and the ratio. D mixes B and C in 2:72:7, so its strength is 2b+7c2+7\dfrac{2b+7c}{2+7}.

strength(D)=2b+7c9=3a9=a3 strength(D)strength(A)=a/3a=13\begin{aligned} &\text{strength}(D) = \frac{2b+7c}{9} = \frac{3a}{9} = \frac{a}{3}\\ &\Rightarrow\ \frac{\text{strength}(D)}{\text{strength}(A)} = \frac{a/3}{a} = \frac{1}{3} \end{aligned}
strength(D):strength(A)=1:3(option a)\text{strength}(D):\text{strength}(A) = 1:3\quad\text{(option a)}
