Build the core paragraph: 1–3–4–5. Sentence 1 opens by naming the topic — “a particularly interesting example of inference” in single-panel comics. Sentence 3 explains it: the humour requires you to imagine the instant before or after the panel. Sentence 4 continues — “to get the joke, you actually have to figure out what some of these missing panels must be.” Sentence 5 elaborates the mechanism: the cartoonist devised a series of panels but shows you only one. This chain (1–3–4–5) is entirely about the reader’s act of inference.
