XAT 2015QA & DI Question 14

Inequality Maximization / MinimizationEasy

If a, b, c and d are four different positive integers selected from 1 to 25, then the highest possible value of ((a + b) + (c + d))/((a + b) + (c – d)) would be:

Answer & solution

  • A

    47

  • B

    49

  • 51

  • D

    96

  • E

    None of the above

Solution

Let a + b + c = X

We need to find the maximum value of:

X+dX-d=(X-d)+2dX-d=1+2dX-d

2dX-d

is maximum when d is maximum and X is minimum possible.

∴ d = 25 and X = 26
The highest possible value of the given expression = 1 + (2 × 25) = 51
Hence, option (c).
