CAT 2000QA Question 29

Even / Odd FunctionsEasy
Passage / Data

Given below are three graphs made up of straight-line segments shown as thick lines. In each case choose the answer as

1. if f(x) = 3 f(–x);

2. if f(x) = –f(–x);

3. if f(x) = f(–x); and

4. if 3 f(x) = 6 f(–x), for x ≥ 0.

Answer & solution

  • A

    1

  • 2

  • C

    3

  • D

    4

Solution

In the given figure, f(3) = −1,  f(−3) = 1

i.e. f(3) = −f(−3)

∴ (1), (3) and (4) cannot be correct choices.

If we check with remaining values we conclude that f(x) = −f(−x)

Hence, option (b).
