Ignoring the loss making operations of the company in 1998, for how many operations was the percentage increase in net income before taxes and charges higher than the average increase from 1998 to 1999?

Answer & solution

  • A

    0

  • B

    1

  • 2

  • D

    None of these

Solution

The average increase in income before taxes and charges from 1998 to 1999 (ignoring the loss making operations)

=(7-31)+(341-111)+(838-94)+(97-19)+(75-26)5

= 1077/5 = 215.4

Looking at the Incomes of the various operations in 1998 and 1999, it is clear that Argentina and the Far East definitely have percentage increases of more than 400%. It is also clear that all the other operations (except North America and the Middle East) will have percentage increases less than 200%.

% Increase in North America and Middle East from 1998-99 = 341-111111 × 100 ≈ 210

Hence, option (c).
